Adapting pre-flop to the changing table dynamics
24 November 2008Part 1: Reacting to the isolation raise
When you sit down at a poker table you should try and categorise as many players as possible. It is the players’ tendencies that are going to impact your game play or at least they should be. These tendencies may become more apparent over time but keeping record of players can help you in this area. Having statistics on each player will certainly help you do this, although it is not necessary for everyone. I personally do not use them and the reason is I like to play creatively and take a more feel approach and sometimes statistics can cloud my judgement. This is just my personal preference and I recently took a personality test which showed that I rely on a feel approach in many situations. I believe each poker player should tune their game style to their abilities and their strengths. Although you have a style your game should still be changing as dynamics of the game change.
When I open up a table, I firstly look around to see if there are weak players and try and sit on their left. An interesting table dynamic that can arise is when a weak player open limps. If it is folded around to me I will open up my range to isolate this player by raising. My goal is to see a flop heads up against this player but if he folds I can collect the dead money which is just as good. When I raise in this situation I will raise 1 big blind bigger than my opening raise; this is because I want to discourage others from entering the pot if they have position on me. The reason I want to discourage others from entering the pot is my range is a little wider in this situation and I don’t want to get lots of callers who had a better price. The goal is to play against the weaker player but if I have good players behind me still left to act I will likely have to make my isolation raising range tighter.
If a weaker player limps in and a player to my right raises and I know they are capable of isolating I will 3-bet in this spot more often than I would do if the weaker player had not limped in. This is because I know the player who isolated has a wider range in this situation and if they are doing this regularly I will be more inclined to 3-bet wider. The frequency in which they isolate will have a strong correlation to how wide my 3-bet range is. In this scenario my range will consist of the typical range I normally 3-bet for value with and sometimes I will increase this slightly if I believe I can get value from worse hands. The other part to my range are hands with little value but which have some high card value e.g. K4s which means I can still make top pair or flop a flush draw when called.
Therefore when I know this player is likely to be isolating a weaker player I widen my range for 3-betting. Although I will widen my 3-bet range in this spot, this does not necessarily mean that I am increasing the number of hands that I raise for value. Rather, to ensure my range remains polarised. This means I appear aggressive with a wider range but the range I will be stacking off with is still the typical range of your tight aggressive player. When I 3-bet with K4s I do not lose value from my hand as it is a hand I do not normally open or 3-bet with, I am only playing it because I think I am going to take down the pot enough of the time because of this particular table dynamic. The reason why I prefer to have K4s compared to 62o is firstly K4s makes top pair more often, it is suited which adds some value and it reduces the chance he has AK or KK. If instead I have a hand with good post flop potential i.e. a suited connector or low pocket pair, I likely want to keep the pot small and keep the weaker player in the pot and I will just call the isolation raise and try and make two pair or better or a strong draw. If I have a mid pocket pair e.g. 88 I don’t want to 3-bet as I cannot stand a 4-bet so I will call with these hands. I will be more inclined to call if the regular who isolated will likely 4-bet or fold, when holding a hand that can’t stand a 4-bet but is still good.
When thinking about 3-betting in this situation I will first consider other factors before deciding. If I have players behind who are aggressive and know that I am 3-betting with a wider range then I will have to make sure it is not too wide to the extent that I am easily exploited. Another important factor to consider is my image. When considering my image, it is more feel based than anything; I likely have an overall image and a current image. This could be the case if I play an overall tight aggressive game but have played a looser style for this session. Knowing which one will have a greater impact will help me make better decisions. It is important to indentify the players who will 4-bet you light just because you 3-bet three times in a row against them and the ones that will still wait for a good hand, but widen their range slightly for now. If my image is perceived as tight I will be more inclined to 3-bet a player who is likely isolating.
130,000 hands
19 November 2008Improving my game
14 November 2008Long time since I posted an update, no I didn't go broke. Just didn't feel like blogging. Well I will post a graph probably soonish as I <3 graphs lol. Anyway I have just made a break out a break even stretch of 50,000 hands although its a little early to say that im completely clear. My winrate overall has been positive but thats because of running worse at 200NL a while back. In my last 30,000 hands at 100NL I have had a winrate of 8bb/100. Its been pretty ugly, I have repeatedly had 10 buy in downswings, and I know its due to my laggy style. Anyway the feeling sucks so bad when you run the table over you made like 20BB from being aggro pre flop and on the flop and then you get it all in as a huge favourite and your aggressive image has worked for you, then he sucks out... and its like eurgg...
During this time I have done so much learning and thinking and really got to grips with hands I 3-bet IP and plays for checking as the pre-flop aggressor, to shove over any flop bet. A good spot is you squeeze with AA and get two callers, and flop is like 810K, 2 suits and when you check it normally means your done with the hand. There's alot of money in the pot, so this spot is pretty good to shove over the top.
Also I like the concept of smooth calling AK to an UTG raise but 3-betting AJo, as with AJo you will often be getting reversed implied odds so you should just muck this hand but by 3-betting you can get him to fold by overepping your hand and it makes it easier to play than flopping an ace and trying to guess on the turn when he fires again, when u have top pair. Generally I am now 3-betting hands in spots where there's a raise and a call, like AJo that play well heads up. But flatting AJs that play well in multiway pots and KQs... Before I was probably 3-betting just because its profitable to 3-bet IP against people but now I am doing it for a more deeper purpose and calling for good reasons. Also while I dont tilt all that much, I get pretty annoyed which leads to a few loose pre flop calls but then I shut back down to playing well. I think I need to try and get into a deeper focus and play less robotic. As there are some games I am unsure what everyone has and others where I feel I am getting very accurate reads and know how to play my hand on each street. This will be my main focus right now, GL HF.
Discipline and realisation
5 October 2008I think I wasn't over reacting by trying to quit, its a devasting loss. I shrug it off and spend a few days thinking if I am winner or not. I critize myself loads in my head but yet remain confident to others. I think there is no harm in being negative for a while as long as you aren't playing. Once I found some corrections I can make and felt confidence I knew I can beat the game I stepped down a limit and have been grinding. I am pleased I can do this as I was afraid of this situation for a while. In the last week I have been playing good poker and running well. I have turned my $400 deposit into $2300 and have almost recovered my losses at $200NL.
In the end people should realise everyone goes through this and not many deal with it correctly. Playing your cards well is just one factor, you have to be able to cope with losing and despite tilting a little bit I am pleased as I took the right steps to recover.
My plan is to build a bankroll for $200NL out of what I have online currently. This way I dont risk not being able to pay rent as I cashed out my previous roll and will use this for living exspenses. Therefore I am building my roll up again at $100NL, which isn't a problem as I realised I have leaks to plug, which will be good to get fixed at $100NL. My winrate is about 8 big blinds per 100 hands and i want to push this up to at least 12 big blinds per 100. Then I should have a better game and a roll for 200NL.

Dropped down to NL100
25 September 2008I redopsited on the same site and have been playing NL100 a little bit today and yesterday and so far so good. The goal is to recover my recent losses and I am in no rush and I feel more confident in my game. I have done alot of thinking on suited connectors and when to 3-bet them IP, OOP and when I should be calling with them.
Also some good news is for my final project at university I will be writing a poker tool which will most likely be a poker bot for NL. I will have one of the professors as my superviser and he loves poker. Hopefully I can play him, I shall let you know ^^
GL guys.
Graph and Goals
8 September 2008My rent is £270 (pounds) a month and my tuition fees will be covered by my sponsor. I have noticed the site I am playing on becoming tougher as it is likely people are no longer on holiday. I know I am going to have to make bigger folds and sometimes I appear quite spewy but its because I see alot of crazy action but I think that will die down a little. I think I have a good game vs the regulars which is important. If I can beat the winners on the site I should be fine. Im sure overtime there will be more competent players but I can always grind $100NL which I feel very comfortable playing. $200NL is a little more challenging but for me the biggest factor is handling bigger losses when things go bad.
My goal for october is to make $1000. I believe I will be spending the most that month, from books and partying. The bigger goal is to make my bankroll grow over time, while making withdrawals to pay for rent and living exspenses.
Wish me Luck

Run bad = Tilt
6 September 2008Haven't updated in a while mainly because I haven't played much. My pc broke so had to order the parts and build a new one. Then i went away for 4 days but in the last 2-3 days I have put in over 10 hours.
When i got back from Holiday I immediately ran super cold, and lost 4 buy ins at $100NL. I just wanted to play $100NL before playing $200NL. I had something to eat then played $200NL not to chase losses as I have a bankroll for $200NL and I thought I was playing ok.
I had the usual annoying beats, KK vs AA, QQ vs KK, AA vs 99 losing them all.. Then 77 on a 7AA board, he has AJ, turn is J sigh.. soon I was down $800-$900. I felt pretty tilted and tired but carried on until i was down only $150.
The next day I repeated the whole thing losing $800 and making most of it back. It just seemed like I was only able to win if they folded, if they called I always lossed. I seen it before ye whatever... it still hurts lol. I just wanted AK to hold against A10 but it never did. I soon became pretty tilted and called off a flush draw with a pair for a shove of about 6x the pot size. I then realised everyone was doing it and picked of two others with considerable better hands but still quite marginal. I then started over betting when I thought they would stack off. I climbed back up with some good plays and used my tilted image to my advantage.
Today I had a $100 PL Omaha table, a $100 NL table and two $200 NL tables. Sometimes when your on a cold streak you just need to suck out once to feel a whole lot better. On the Omaha table I got it in with a underset and sucked out for quads! I then sucked out a short stack on the $200NL table with A10 vs AK. In all It was no more than $200 made but it felt better. It put me up $300 over the 10-11 hours of play so pretty good considering.
feel good
10 August 2008But I had a hand where I called a flop bet with a gut-shot and with the intention of raising some good turn cards to make him fold. I thought he would fold mostly and I still had a little equity in the hand. My hand certainely isn't strong but with enough fold equity I can play if profitable by raising. In this case I decided to call and raise the turn. I got a fold.
Also I managed to tripple barrel at 200NL as a bluff and that worked out. I also flatted a 3-bet with Kings in a spot I thought he was making a move and raised his c-bet on the flop and took it down. I could have flatted again but I wanted to give him a chance to make a big mistake plus he could have hit the board with a pair.
Its been going well, I have had the odd moment but nothing too annoying. I had KK vs AA and stacked off there, which is very standard, some smaller pots ofc but surely running above expectation. Although played more 100NL than 200NL.
TBH I think im still in shock how good poker is going for me. I will be really pleased when I hit 100,000 hands as this is a good sample size to show if your a winner or a loser. I think im about 30,000 hands short.
Ive made a few changes to my game. Dropping broadway hands and using suited connectors a little more. Im managing about 2-3 hours which maybe is a slight increase from 1.5 - 2 hours.
Last 2 days of 100NL and 200NL
7 August 2008Anyway I played a little yesterday and just over 2 hours today. Pretty much my first hand at the 200NL table I got stacked with AK. I hit an Ace on the flop and a king on the river on a very drawy board which was paired. I think the fact I hit the King on the end made no difference I was either way ahead or way behind. Also I did think he was value betting me, so pretty bad call perhaps with top two pair.
Anyway Im now in the SB with AK and get it AIPF against the button who has KK. Well I hit an ace and was even on the 200NL table. Meanwhile I was stacking people everywhere on 100NL. I repeatedly shoved the turn when people had a flush draw and got them to call and no suckouts!
I made a nice re-squeeze on the 200NL table where MP opened for $7 and gets 1 caller and then a pretty aggressive player re-raises and I decided it was a good spot to 4-bet and I took it down preflop.
Later on I fired up a 200NL table and 3 100NL tables and had 97s in the blinds on the 200NL table. There was a limper and an aggressive player put it up to $10 and I thought his range was super wide and I had played so few hands so thought my image was good. I was just soo card dead for like 20 mins. So I re-raised to $30 (maybe a little too small). He just called to my suprise and the flop was 995 and I just bet the whole way and took his stack (He had KK).
Well im running super hot right now and very thankful to the poker gods
Im finding 200NL kind of intense when all in pre flop. $400 is alot of moooonies. I can do alot with £200 so its very nice when I outdraw KK lol.
Im trying to play more poker, and managed 2 hours 15 mins today. Oh well, I feel drained so sometimes its better just not to play.
Poker Video
30 July 2008I made a poker video a little while ago. Unfortunately it took most the day to get the right software but oh well I managed to get 20 minutes recorded. Before I do another one I will look into better software as I had to do the sound seperately.
First Poker Video - 2 Tables of $100NL
I was going to post my graph from the site, but I didn't want to bug the site for my hands. I realised I can use a hand grabber tool but I was quite wanting to make one big graph. I will post it later.
At the moment im taking a break from poker, about a week. I have a few things organised and I could do with a break just as im feeling a little tilted by people. Im at my highest point in poker right now and my last session I thought was just brilliant. I made great reads and good plays and was sucked out on continously for a while and ended up on the session. But I felt annoyed a few sessions before, just from people playing badly which isn't the normal kind of tilt.
Infact i started teaching this guy who claimed to have been playing 4 days. I was telling him this is a good flop for me to bet without anything and he played back at me the next time when i had TPTK. Being who I am I felt bad as I had brought this play on so I told him I have top pair, we will check it down unless you have me beat. Looking back I guess it may have looked like I was trying to get information about his hand but I wasn't. He had no pair and I had top pair, he checked I checked. River.. He bet I called, he showed King high. him: "oh" me: "sigh.."
I hate starting up a poker session. I feel scared to 'gamble'. Soon as I have lost a pot I can relax its a little odd. If I dont lose a pot I just play ABC poker until I lose just one pot and then im playing comfortable, double barrelling and floating when I think its profitable and value betting and folding as appropriate... kinda weird and annoying.
I said I would step up to $200NL when I have $5K, but now I am thinking I might wait for $6K. I dont know I will probably play 1 table of $200NL if it looks good. I dont play scared at $200NL or anything, just I would rather have 30 buy ins. Anyway I am thankful for good dicipline in poker, something which I once lacked...
Should I be playing 7 hours a day and really pushing it? I dont know.. I feel like I should but I guess pacing myself through the weeks is better. I think taking a week off can do myself good. I think I will have a massage also, its good to reward yourself and having a calm and rested sense of mind is just so important in poker.

No Play No Pay
20 July 2008
Actually one of the bluffs was something I would do when playing my complete A game. I raised a flop donk lead and got the feeling after he called he was pretty relunctant to play a big pot. I bet the turn strong with an overcard and he folds. Kind of standard well maybe not at $100NL. Its kind of funny when you listen to decent players saying just play ABC tight aggressive poker and you can beat $100NL. I know its true, I mean if your playing sound poker and playing your hands for value its a profitable style. But its good to know that your not going to improve that fast and be able to beat mid stake games by playing straight forward because their are less fish who will just hand you the money. Really the best way to improve is to take shots and play a looser style for a while.
I was reading some blogs on here where people are getting frustrated by players playing loose. It just comes across like they have been told to play TAG and are wondering why its not working. No one style is correct its completely dependant on the table your at. If you only play a very tight and aggressive style but when a player comes along who is playing most or alot of his hands but is actually good at reading hands and post flop play. Maybe this player is a good player on tilt perhaps, if you dont adapt or worse you adapt by playing tighter than usual you may actually be too easy to read and exploitable more than you think. Also if you aren't used to loosening up and therefore your being forced to play outside your comfort zone this isn't ideal either. Because in this situation I think its important to isolate this player to get to the flop heads up and play more playable hands in position. I think its important to be able to play many different styles as well as styles like a maniac. There are times I am so aggressive pre flop the whole table will tighten up so much and just wait for a big hand thinking I am going to pay them off massively, that when we get it in they are annoyed to see I hit two pair on the flop. When in actual fact their hand was face up and I was able to decide if to put the money in. Plus the fact I am willing to change down a gear if I started to get 3-bet pre flop.
What is really great is when you figure stuff out for yourself and then you here a pro mention the good players are doing it. Recently I have been 3-betting alot more in position and playing a little tighter when 3-betting out of position. A great place to 3-bet high face cards is when on the button against a cut off opener and if your know he calls with worse and his range is wide so he will be giving you good fold equity you can 3-bet a reasonable range here.
A hand I had recently against a decent player who will play his hands mostly for value rather than deception but will fold when he has just a pair and there's action and therefore is playing pretty straightforward. There was a raise by the decent player and I cold called with AJ I sometimes raise but its pretty dependant on reads and game flow. So I call in position and a player out the blinds called. He hadn't stood out as a player I was avoiding and I had no reason to think he was good. The flop was a dry AXX and the player out the blinds bet $10 into a $12 pot and the decent player called. This is a spot I really hate calling in. I only have a pair and the decent player could easily have AK or AQ and have me beat. I doubt the other player has more than a weak ace if that and I think if he has two pair its very rare. I also think the cold call implies he doesn't have AK and wants to keep the pot small. I haven't been active a ton and I know by raising im turning my hand into a bluff and bloating the pot. I think its really hard to play this hand well by calling, I almost prefer folding but I cant really fold. I do something I dont do too often with a marginal hand which is to raise to $30. I think its really hard for the player out of position who most likely had a weak holding of a weak ace to carry on after someone calls his bet and then someone re raised 3x. I think the decent player being the player he is will be forced to give up his 1 pair hands. I think a set and two pair are in my range, I could flat with A8s or pocket 5's if the flop was A58. I know if he's holding AQ he will find it hard to call a raise. To my suprise the more unknown player calls and the decent player folds, I would now go for pot control and check when he checks to me. The turn brings a jack and now I have top two and also a well disguised hand. I think he made a bad call on the flop although he could have a set but now im going to have to pay it off anyhow. I end up getting it in against A9, with no 9 on the board and the whole hand just looks really spewy by both of us but I think my play is good. Its good to show I can blur the line between the nuts and a bluff by raising a marginal hand in a spot I think I can fold out better hands from a player I know will fold a 1 pair hand in a spot like this but get value a small percentage of the time from a player I think is weak and more of a calling station. Most of all I thought I had high fold equity and calling would be playing a little blind.
Thoughts appreciated, thats it for now.
Mixing in $200NL
18 July 2008I have signed up to deucescracked and watched some of their training videos. I really like watching Krantz and like his thinking. I also watched another player and I think he has a completely different style to me. I really didn't like his style. He was defending by calling with SC's and I hate defending. I guess I really like pre flop play and it made me realise I have some work to do post flop. I watched a video geared at post flop but it only enforced what I already knew but was helpful nonetheless.
I am really pleased with my success at poker over the last 2 months. In a week I will have played at this site for 2 months and I have played over 50,000 hands so far. I have just started playing 1 table of 200NL and 3 100NL tables. I was almost card dead at the 200NL table but I will keep doing this setup for now, unless I go on a downswing and then I will cut it out.
I was told by so many people that poker is luck and I should quit while ahead or quit before something awful happens. I have been told I was getting lucky and all stuff like this. I feel my understanding has so much more to develop but at the same time I am making good money for a student and I am very thankful. I think all my hard work and dedication is starting to pay off
I really will continue to push myself hard because I want to be a top no limit hold'em player and I think with alot of hardwork it is possible. I know alot of people think this about themself but I have already shown I can profit from the game over the long run which isn't easy. I already feel like my family should be celebrating at what i am acheiving but sadly its unlikely to ever be like that. Nicely enough more people are taking me seriously and showing interest, its finally nice to get a little respect.
Well I will soon post a graph as an update of how poker is going. For now I will try and step up to $200NL and try and play more hands each day.
Success
9 July 2008So my friend kinda wanted to carry on but I think its a good time to stop. We achieved what we set out to do and the risk of going bust is pretty big so I dont see the reason to keep carrying on.
In total I made us both £170, which he said will cover the cost of the new iPhone he wants
back to $100NL for me, but I shall soon start mixing in some $200NL.
Staked for tournaments
9 July 2008So with the $400 we have I decided it would be a good idea to play tournaments online. I know you can go for a while without cashing in tournaments and im not sure how good I am at tournaments so buying in for $50 doesn't sound that nice to me. But with his stake I can play bigger tournaments.
We decided to start tonight so I played firstly at his house, getting knocked out almost instantly in a $15 tournament which was the only one running at the time, we were here to take risk so I suggested doing a heads up SnG. I sat down at a $100 SnG HU and won! My opponent was pretty bad suprisingly.
As there were no big tournaments going I registered for a $25 tournament and ended up coming 4/140 and cashed $262.50.
Good start, Im going to be playing tournaments for a bit now and hopefully make some money for me and my friend
Downswing
4 July 2008That was annoying also i got about $120 of my money in with TPTK against this donk and he called with top pair no kicker, rivered two pair and put his remaining $ in. That was so frustrating and when he won a few big pots with ace high arg he does fold but was just so lucky. I then had QQ river a set against my two pair for a big pot and i got all in with overcards and nut flush draw twice for 200BB and lost vs a pair each time. Each time my overcards were outs meaning I was the favourite each time.
There were many others, from my peak today to the low point it was a drop of $1000 (10 buy ins). I took a break and saw my friend across the road and then played 2-4 tables for the night to early morning. Luckily my hands held and overall today i finished down only $289.
I tilted a bit, but overall im quite pleased I kept reasonably good control and was able to take a break and come back playing my absolute A game. This just makes me feel I dont want to step up a level without at least 30 buy ins for that level.
Adjusting 3-betting ranges
30 June 2008You want to be a level above your opponent, so if he is opening to many hands you want to 3-bet lighter. If they are 3-betting too lightly you want to tighten your opening range and 4-bet with a hand you can get it in with. Typically I dont think you want to 4-bet lightly immediately without a hand. I think you need to adjust your opening range to counter his light raises. There is no point opening a marginal hand, if you feel there's a good chance someone will come over the top, the counter isn't just to 4-bet JQs.
There are times I will 3-bet KQ and times I will instantly fold it pre flop. If someone is opening to many hands, but I know calls 3 bets too lightly, I will likely 3-bet KQ, AJ, AQ, AK+, 88+. If I know he's capable of calling my raise with a wider range or maybe I simply have large fold equity to open my range. But if I have position on him then I am comfortable 3 betting with KQo. It may feel safer to call, but if the above is true about his tendancy to call lightly its a good play.
Then there are times I will most definately not 3-bet KQ, I will chose to call if person who open raised will call 3-bets only with a tigher range or is likely to 4-bet me and then I obviously have to fold. There are times you can call knowing your above his range and also knowing he c-bets alot. Here you can call a flop bet and this can be effective. If the person open raising is a solid TAG (tight and aggresive) I dont like 3-betting KQ because I only get action by better hands. Here I prefer 3-betting with JJ+, AQ+ and suited connectors. Here your range is just as wide as before meaning you dont just have big pocket pairs, but your range is now very polarized. This means if you get re raised you will either dump your hand or re raise him back. If he re raises you back when you hold 78s you can just muck. In the case he calls your raise and you face a flop for example Q104 and you hold 78, you can c-bet this flop unless you have a reason too check, its quite important to carry this strength to the flop. If you develop a read he always has a good hand in this situation you can adjust but without reads leading the flop is good. The important thing is when you do get raised you can dump your hand, but if we were using a range which included KQ we would be in a tough spot and most likely beat. We know this player is a TAG therefore if we are 3 betting hands like KQ, when we do hit a Q or K we are most likely beat if we get action. He most likely has a set, AQ, overpair or is making a move which only makes up only a small part of his range.
Therefore against a TAG who will only call your 3-bets with hands that dominate a range of KQ, AJ, AQ, 88+ its best to drop the marginal hands like KQ and introduce suited connectors. This way we wont have kicker problems and with 78s we will either hit big or we wont.
Small pockets pairs I believe should be played aggressively when you believe your opponents range is broad. This can be determined largely by position. This is why I would much rather 3-bet the button with a pocket pair. If I call I would be looking to hit a set, otherwise its hard to steal the pot, because it becomes what I think of as a blind steel. If your going to call with 66 in the big blind to a button raise and then when a 47J flop comes, if you lead you may get raised off your hand easily. Alternatively if you raise a flop bet your now turning your hand into a bluff unless they will call with overcards. Therefore if your going to try and steal some pots with low pocket pairs I prefer to 3-bet pre flop and carry the aggression when you hit a set and also when you dont hit a set. I dont like defending the blinds by calling and I choose to just fold alot. I will play back with hands I would typically open in middle position if its a cut off raise or button raise. I am more inclined to call with a small pocket pair to an UTG raiser than to re raise.
10 BB/100
28 June 2008This site is just so good, i feel like i should be playing every second of the day. I checked out titan poker and the average pots at $100 NL is about $5 i was confused, then i realised everyone was short stacked. I checked all the way to $600NL and same thing was happening which obviously is going to result in smaller pots. I dont like it at all, I checked party poker and saw $20+ avg pots and felt better. Then again there are probably other sites like sports betting sites with juicy action. Anyway I have played well against the better players at $100NL and had profited from the US sites a while back so I shouldn't worry.
It was kinda of annoying just earlier. I put my opponent on 1 hand only AQ. When the turn brought a king i bet again and then bet strong on river, was so annoying to see AQ. I knew exactly what he had which takes some skill and yet i lose half my stack. Some players hands are just so face up, its really frustrating for some reason. It would probably tilt me if I wasn't so controlled. Example is...
.... I have played an hour at a table and this player i know is weak/bad player and has been folding to my c-bets alot and just calls down with top pair or folds river when board gets scary. Then suddenly you get a hand and he thinks for ages, longer than normal. This either means, he has a super strong hand or he has a draw, seeing as there are no draws i checked behind. Then he bets 1/4 of the pot and I call as I have hit. Then on the river he bets even less than he did on the turn!! jesus its so annoying. Its like what could you possibly have??? I wonder??? arg..
Another hand I had, I checked behind on the turn, and the club draw completes, It was a 3bet pot and about $35 and he bets $1 on the river with his Ace high flush... I called merely for information.
Another thing is people who check and then call super fast always have top pair weak kicker and in this spot im just not sure whether to bluff. I think its better to just fold knowing that your beat or if your ahead bet for value. I think some boards allow you to bluff but its player dependant. Can be annoying when you bluff a station... Yeh im being very aggressive currently.
I watched a video of someone on two plus two and he got some good comments, but honestly I thought his play was ok but not great. Something I have realised is just how bad it is to play out of position, we all know its hard but why do people still call with JQ out the blinds?. If I have AQ out of position, if I call, Im going to face not seeing an ace or a queen 2/3 of the time and will be facing a bet a large amount of the time. If i raise a flop bet its kind of a blind raise. I think im always 3 betting out of position or folding, i only really call with pocket pairs and even now im re raising 88+. Im occasionally calling but its so rare.
How I see it is, Im re raising a large amount and ok if people start to play back at me, I would have to adapt but for your average $100NL game its not normal for this to occur. When i 3bet AQ and hit a Q, I will be looking to get it in on the flop often. Obviously there are alot of players I am just bet folding on the flop but they would be very passive players. The fact I am being so aggressive means TPTK in a 3bet pot is a much better hand. I think often when i 3bet AQ i get a large amount of folds, so maybe calling with AQ gets the most value but I prefer just to play aggressive and play to make players fold. Im just looking at playing all my hands in position or out of position in a large initial pot. I dont see how you can call with anything in the blinds profitably. I will 3 bet the button with hands like A10. I see people make alot of loose calls with hands like JQ when i 3 bet, so i know i can continue on the flop and get alot of folds still. I think in a tougher game where people are not limping, It would start becoming more of a fit or fold, I would probably stop 3 betting with marginal holdings, and do a more suited connector and big pairs CR style.
You really are just looking to play a level above your opponent, if he limps alot then re raise his limps a fair amount, if he is opening to much 3 bet him a little bit more than normal. If I open to much and this happens to me I tighten up and if he doesn't adjust I can 4 bet with a range more geared towards getting it in then he has in his 3 betting range. I think simply opening alot then 4 betting light because he is 3 betting light just appears totally obvious if you do it within a short space of hands. I think its important to remember to raise largely for value.
Something I do is blurr my range, it may look like im over valuing my hand but im not. I very rarely over shove and if i do its always for value, I thought in this particular hand I wouldn't be given credit and was hoping a call from KK. The board was XXXQQ, and I shoved a huge amount on the river, I felt a little scared cause I knew he had a pocket pair for a full house some % of the time. I really thought I would get a call with KK for a 350BB pot. I had KQ and he called with Q5, wooo!!
Good start
27 June 2008
I really didn't feel tilted in the slightest, I think because I am confident in my game and I see myself recover from it time and time again, each time it gets easier and easier to picture yourself winning the money back. Now I have made about 4 buy ins in the last 2 days.
I have started to re-isolate alot now, I found myself re-isolating with K3o the other day, maybe this is bad but I had just sat down at a table with a guy who had a good stack. So many players limp, and I am isolating alot. I can assume this player is doing the same and will not give me any action without a real hand as I am unknown to him. I have started to target regulars in a way. I dont try to get into pots with them, but sometimes there are times to exploit them when there exploiting players who limp/fold. I also found myself putting in a re raise as a bluff and for value.
I found myself shoving in spots when i turned a strong draw and thought I had enough fold equity. One great spot was when I cbet a J high flop, then turn brings a queen. I have AKs and I now have a flush draw and a 10 would bring a straight. Firstly I have a strong draw and still have ok equity vs top pair. But also its unlikely he will have the queen and could fold a pair of jacks. I like shoving this turn for these reasons when he has only a pot sized bet.
Today this player who I knew was one of the better players, was at my table. I was being aggressive towards him, and raised the turn for information and for value and got a fold which was good with 10 10 on a low flop. After being aggressive and most likely annoying him I then flopped a strong hand and bet strong on the turn in hope he may think im trying to get a fold. The river brought a 3rd club and he checked to me. I didn't see how he was playing a flush this way unless he has top pair also. I bet about half pot and got a 3rd call. I dont see his muck'd cards but he left after that hand.
One hand that was suprising was after running the table down winning about 15 hands from the last 30. Almost all I had won by putting in one raise pre flop and this led me to open my opening range to about 60%. I then got a raise and I had I think AQ, i re raised and he called. It was blind vs button. I bet out on Q25. He shoved on me for about twice the pot, I was confused but called having seen people turn up with worse. He showed 63 and my hand held. He had folded so many hands I was confused how he didn't have a hand. Although at the same time I had 3 bet AQ and see people stick it in with worse so had to call, having got 14% of my stack in pre flop and after c-betting the flop had to go with the hand.
One hand that didn't go well was shoving top pair and a flush draw into the nut straight...
Things I want to work on are how to adapt to a player who exploits the fact you C-bet alot. I am not really having this problem but I think tightening up pre flop will make my C-bets seem more believable. I think also check raising flops with good hands and strong draws as well as C-betting good hands and strong hands could balance my play and make it harder to play back at me. Im interested to know how players adapt to players adapting to them in this situation.
anyway gl hf.
Im on holiday!
21 June 2008He then asked for double or nothing, so i said ok we will flip for £20. I dealt cards, we turned them over and I dealt the board, his hand won and it was even. Was pretty fun, but when I went into work, he emailed me and ended the email saying i owe him £10!... i remember every card as well... pff.. well if he was right he wasn't in the office, i am so certain he's wrong lol.
I just read a thread on 2+2 showin all in graphs of this guy running 60 buy ins below expectation over 80,000 hands. wow thats horrible... I never had anything this bad, but at least he has a graph to prove it, I couldn't do that with PKR. I mean he must just feel like he knows which card is comin next because its been the only one he doesn't want to see so often. Thats how I felt, Id be thinking please no runner runner, and it would do just that. Now the thought of getting runner runner now just doesn't enter my head, when it happens its reasonably rare, infact it hapepned last week when i was recording a video of me playing. But its rare like it should be.
I think I will not choose to play on a thin roll. Im just going to see it out, im on a 25 BI roll, this should be ok, but I think its wise to more than double it before moving up. I would like to have 35 BI +
Well im looking forward to playing this summer. Think Im gonna spend the day relaxing seeing friends, then I hope to spend long nights playing, probably do this for a couple of weeks and see how it going. Decide whether to travel etc. Spend weekends playing loads, hopefully it will go well. I should start playing 26th of June
Changing Gears
14 June 2008There have been times, where I have been short on money, and I have played on PKR, which at the time I thought was the best way to make money. But I have spent alot of time on Pokerstars and Full Tilt, which are where most of the US players are playing. Since 2006 the US government made it harder for US residents to make payments to sites, so this by default means, the average player on these sites are better than the average player before the ban. You then also have the added fact european players are more likely to play else where, because the competition is likely to be softer.
But I made sure to play lots of hands at poker stars and full tilt, in my mind i didn't really think there was a huge difference, and i did still have many times where i would table select, but generally i just clicked on a table with an empty seat. But now i realise not only was I playing on a tough site, I was playing at tough times, If i played in the early evening, it would be about mid day for alot of players there. I hadn't really thought about this so much. Infact I haven't even played the games at the best times on these sites, but I was still making money.
Since I found this new site, I have decided I will play to win money, not just to improve. I will improve by reviewing, analysing and reading about poker. The summer is coming and games will likely loosen further. I am now not even playing at times which aren't so profitable. Today I am tidying my flat and then going outside, I'll maybe eat out and then I will come back and play in the evening, If I am awake I might re deposit on poker stars or full tilt and play through the morning, which should be the saturday night for most the players there.
Its about time, I table select, time select, and site select to try and maximize my win rate.
Last night which was a friday night, I was playing and wow it was loose at one point. One pot I had I think bottom set and won a $300 pot (300BB), I think someone had J 10 for top pair, and someone else just had like a missed draw... Infact I ran so incredibly hot last night, I seemed to steal every pot when I either had a weak hand or no hand, and just stacked people when I flopped sets. I was getting lucky, but I am playing such a more aggressive game then everyone else, they are playing weak passive and I can expect to profit, but last night was good.
The last 3 days before that I had lost almost 4 buy ins.. I played badly, ran badly and picked bad spots to make moves. I was just tired from work I think. I didn't play that bad and I didn't tilt, but the next day I keep thinking about bad calls I made, even if it was only one bad call for the night. Also I realised wednesday night is quite a bit tougher than friday night ^^. I really needed to adapt to making more folds, I find i can call down very lightly on weekend nights, and sometimes I am playing to many tables to get good reads on players, the site isn't supported for me to use PAHUD but Im not a big fan of it anyway.
bonus completion: 60%....
15 days of grinding
8 June 2008In total I put in 17,416 hands. I suffered a long breakeven stretch but im not at all worried about this, i remember clearly just how bad I was running. I would grind it up without showdowns and then just be outted continuously and just couldn't build my BR.
Had a bit of a heater at the end, but its a good sample size, my win rate is 8.3BB/100, but i wouldn't be surprised if it drops to maybe 6BB/100.
Graph
I am very pleased because I am probably rolled for $100NL with the money on the site, I am just looking to double my BR and then play $200NL.
This is really the first time I have played some serious amount of hands. In the past I have spent alot of time playing tough tables, tough sites and playing 1 table, learning, reviewing, and now finally im grinding for realz
No play
7 June 2008I went out and ate some good food, and walked around london, I then bumped into Paul at his usual place, I told him about my challenge and said I didn't make much but here is £10 ($20) which is about 10% of what I made that weekend. So that felt good and we had a nice chat and he appreciated me helping him.

The Nuts against good reg
6 June 2008Well last night i ran some good plays, and just gonna make a quick note about a few of them. I had a good short session last night, i ran well but also found about 4 spots for big bluffs, i pulled of 3 of them and one i gave up on the river and decided to check it down, his hand was face up and i just didn't think he was folding for any bet.
One hand I had last night was against a good reg. He is in my mental group of 10 players I have in my mind as solid players at this site. They are most likely making money on these tables, but compared to players on full tilt i could find alot of players like this player. Even though I do make a monster hand against him, I think It showed I was thinking on a higher level than him.
I get dealt AA, and he makes a standard 4x raise. I re raise out the blinds to $14 and he calls. Generally im 3 betting quite a tight range, but looser than most. More often than not I have QQ+ or AK, he probably knows this but also knows I am making plays on players like him who are opening more than the rest of the table who generally open limp alot.
The flop comes AXJ, or a very similar flop. I lead out for about 90% pot, and I get a call. The turn blanks, and I think he is aware i often bet flops and check turns when I miss. I think he doesn't realise I only play that exploitable against players who are weak and who are not taking note.
I think there's not to many hands he will stick his money in, KK will not be calling down 3 streets, neither QQ, JJ will be getting the money in possibly AJ, AK, AQ although becoming more doubtful obviously also trip X's. Therefore if i bet the turn, it will look strong, and he will re-evaluate his AQ. By calling a turn bet he is likely going to face a river shove. I think by betting the turn I lose the weaker holdings he might have.
I decide to check the turn, because he is aggressive and might turn some weaker holdings into a bluff, he might hold nothing, I see him calling my 3 bet reasonably light, so i think he could float me, but I think he is not that aggressive to float me if i bet the turn, after having 3 bet pre flop from the blinds against him. I think my best line is to check and let him bet. I check and he bets about 3/4 the pot. I raise 2.5 times his bet and he folds.
Now the reason I think this is a good play (where I could be wrong) is because I think he will think I am weak when i check, I think he will bet with almost his entire range if i check, this range obviously includes big hands like JJ. I think by raising I force out almost the same amount of hands that are weak as if I had bet the turn. I think there are a few hands I force out which would have called a turn bet, but I think these hands will most likely fold to a river bet anyway.
If he has a weak/vunerable holding like top pair, and i bet he will call the turn but fold to a river bet.
if he has a weak/vunerable holding and i check, he will bet to protect but fold to a raise. or he will check but call/bet the river for value.
Either way I think he's only calling one bet or betting one bet. Therefore I dont think I need to worry about losing value from these weaker holdings.
This may or may not be true, but I think based on how I think he plays and how he plays against me I believe at this current time he will play that way.
Therefore whether i check/raise or bet I still extract the same amount from his weaker holdings, but when he does have a big hand im building a good pot for me to win. Obviously hands like JJ we are getting it all in anyway, unless the board becomes somehow scary.
Most importantly he is a regular and I am sending out the message, if i check, it doesn't mean you can just bet and take it down, this could help me draw out cheaply in the future against him and makes me hard to play against. Soon as i raised he instantly folded which meant i most likely got the most value from his bluff.
Therefore to conclude, I believe i only lose a little value from some marginal hands, which would perhaps call me down but fold to a check raise. But i think as his range is largely a bluff I think i get the most value from this play. But then you might ask why did I not call his bet and let him bluff the river. I want to check raise him here so that i can check raise him with a strong draw or bluff in the future. Although I didn't show the hand down, he did leave my table and I have been check raising on the turn with some bluffs also.
Ok another hand, I hold 10 10 and a 1 get 1 billion limpers limping infront. I just choose to limp on the button. Often im raising but I find that when the entire table limps, I most likely get one caller. Even if i make it another BB to call on top of raising 4x + 1 BB for each limper, someone out there has already married there J10suited. Therefore I just dont mind taking the passive line with my tens in position. If it were 1 or 2 limpers Its almost certain im raising as I just generally choose the aggressive line. So now im just looking to hit a 10 and take a few pot from sensing weakness and maybe value betting 10's but generally looking to fold unless i hit. I dont like to try and steal pots when i was passive post flop, i find it less effective and if i flop an over pair I will try to show it down cheaply, and I am pretty willing to let the hand go, which could be bad as maybe I can get more value being aggressive with 10 10 but its good to mix it up even with a table full of limpers/bad players.
I see a flop all spades but it contains a 10. everyone checks and I lead out to protect and for value. I get one caller, and I think if he has the nuts or essentially the nuts, these players will likely call my bet then check when the turn blanks, they dont want to scare me, so I think by betting the flop I can protect and.. I can get to showdown cheaply. Luckily enough I made a full house and bet all the way for value. I think the point im making is by betting i keep control and allow this passive player to lose value from his flush or let me suck out cheaply (giving me chance to check turn). Im wondering if I should check or bet this turn if it blanks, its kind of weak checking and letting a spade come to give him a flush. I think I probably would bet to keep the pot small, probably simlar to how i would play a flush infact. Just im folding to aggression most likely on the river by this type of player. Anyway i think its best to bet because you are now in control of the pot size.
Can i clear this bonus..
4 June 2008Anyway I didn't play last night, I just played now and seem to have a problem, before sitting down im getting nervous. I felt my heart racing for the first time ever, I guess I just want to suceed and I cant afford to go broke. I just dont want to slow my progress by dropping to 50NL. I haven't converted my comp points which gives about $30 just so i can keep count of how many i have. This would bring my bankroll on the site to $1380 which is almost 14 buy ins. I will feel alot more confident when I have over 20. I can always redeposit if i go on a sick downswing, but soon i wont be earning from my job. Ill be on my summer and at uni in a few months. I need a roll for uni.
But when i sat down at two tables I felt fine, soon as I steel the blinds take some pots i remember how it is. I feel very comfortable making plays. I never play scared money but now ive built myself some kind of a roll up, Its going to be all about maintaining it.
Having played 20,000 hands or so in 1 and a half weeks and making close to 9 buy ins now, its looking good and i have had a pretty poor run during this and a long break even stretch. I have swung down 5 buy ins twice and i regularly drop a buy in. Its quite normal to have a few tables do ok while im constantly retopping one table and then once im an hour in i stop having to top up the tables and i just go from there. Soon im deep stacked on all tables and this is when poker gets fun.
Poker is not just about playing good poker, this is something I have taken a long long time to master. For me I dont see how a player can be good at poker fast. Even if he is born with poker knowledge I think you have to experience your fair share of beats, frustration, and to do this you need amples of patience. When friends play poker and they get a bad beat, the room is like WOAH! omg thats harsh! and ok it is, there not wrong but they completely over react, if something has a 2% chance like that runner runner king I had, I mean I only have to be in the situation 50 times to see it on average once. This doesn't take long to come around does it...
I think accepting beats its just the hardest thing for me. i would struggle with a substantional downswing due to a thin roll but its so important to not be results orientated over a short amount of time. I just think with all the things required to be good at poker, for me its the above but also an open mind, this means open to critisizm about your game. Looking to improve and to admit you are not the greatest player. To think constantly about your game and also importantly to sort things out in life so that you can be controlled at the table. I used to play very frustrated as if expecting a beat and thats all I got. I am being positive now and I grateful that I came 2nd in that tournament, if i hadn't i would be low on cash and in a difficult situation, not impossible but it could have contributed to a negative state of mind, which is definely -EV.
Poker is the ultimate challenge. There really is not much else out there that challenges you in so many ways. People reading this may think poker really shouldn't be this strenous and draining perhaps. No thats the challenge to make losses not affect your state of mind and to play optimal as much as possible.
For anyone reading this thinking there running bad, yea you most likely are running bad but dont let it stop you reviewing your game. I think i review my game more when im running good rather than bad which isn't good. Im starting to change this but it can be hard. Just remember having a 60/40 edge on your opponent is very good but this edge is not huge, this is why the variance is so high. I guess dont expect to be up everytime you sit down. LIke you flop a set, in the back of your mind you might be thinking just how much will i win, just remember a flush can get there or a better set. Just play the hand the best you can and better than your opponent would against you.
Looking back, I did run awful, I really did run bad, I went on a $5000 swing, ok I played above my limits I stepped up the rankings, but I lost a huge amount at $100NL which is my regular level. I didn't keep track but every hand, like runner runner straights runner runner flushes, two pair makes a boat against my flopped straight, it was constant. It was really just every time i sat down. I felt cursed I felt like the whole world was against me. That was quite a while ago now, and looking back it was probably just 5000 hands or so. Playing 1 table it makes the bad beats seem a lot longer, so powering through the hands really does help power through the bad times. They can come anytime but dont expect them to come. If your a winning player you will profit, some people may run worse than others during 2008, generally its going to be so close for players playing a huge amount of hands. My problem was that I was playing hands very slowly.
Variance is a brilliant excuse for losing players to pretend they are winning players. You need to identify over how many hands you are losing for and identify leaks. I definately had some leaks back then but i believed strongly i was better than so many players at PKR. Whether its true I had leaks and I bet i still do now. Variance is cruel but im learning to accept it, im hoping to power through the hands. I want to get 80,000 hands in very quickly If I can.
So to conclude this waffle, you can have stretches where cards just fall against you, it really does happen more than you would first expect it too, I mean i will see bad beats every day If I play long enough, I will often lose a 70% then another 70%. If you pick 2 points in your session where you get it in with a 70% favourite twice, 9% of the time you will lose both of these hands. How many times does this need to happen for it to occur 3 times in a row?
I believe when getting it in as 70% favourite, you need to do this 37 times on average and you will have a losing streak of 3 in a row (if my maths is correct). When your actually lose 3 in a row it seems awful but its totally standard. I think its good to play around with some maths to just get it in your head how easy it is to run bad, just go into a session knowing this but being confident in your game.
I am very excitied about the future, my plan is to travel to either Thailand, HK or Vegas. EIther way I want to play poker and have lots of fun.
Well im gonna try and get some sleep, im so knackered recently and I wanna put lots of hands in and Ill be posting a graph since playing at this site. Having played so few hands and studied the game vastly I need to put the hands in to back my words up
Target: get bankrolled for 200NL! i can doo it ! just gotta find the time to play
